World mourns the loss of David Bowie

Bowie’s biographer, Paul Trynka, described the Brixton-raised performer as “someone who redefined pop music” and “a creative force who endured over several decades”.

David’s tragic death was announced on Monday (11.01.16) after revelations that he had been battling cancer for 18 months.

In a staggering stroke of timing, Bowie released an album, “Blackstar”, on his 69th birthday Friday – two days before he died.

David Bowie – with his outrageous alter egos – was famed as much for his image and powerful influence on fashion design as he was for his music.

Alongside a black and white picture of himself and David, Mick wrote: “David was always an inspiration to me and a true original”. “And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way”.

Blackstar, co-produced by Bowie’s long-time collaborator Tony Visconti, features only seven songs, but critics praised the latest work, with Britain’s Guardian newspaper calling it “a spellbinding break with (Bowie’s) past”. Not David… Oh my heart – I knew I was awake for some reason- peace and love mr Bowie- u burned bright xxxx. “I wasn’t, however, prepared for it”.

He said: “It was as amusing as always, and as surreal, looping through word games and allusions and all the usual stuff we did. For now, it is appropriate to cry”. “His star will shine in the sky forever”. “But five or six shows in, I’m dying to get off the road and go back into the studio”. As he was experimenting with drum & bass a little at the time, I suggested putting him together with (from memory) Goldie and LTJ Bukem for an event at Ingliston.

The statement read by Moss on behalf of Bowie concluded by saying: “Thank you very, very much and Scotland – stay with us”. “They will never rot”, a sentiment that was only fully revealed yesterday.

David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and Major Tom helped carve a path for the modern-day “pop persona” used by so many of today’s biggest artists.

Blackstar was preceded three years ago by another critically acclaimed album, The Next Day, while in 2014, Bowie asked Kate Moss to accept his best British male prize at the Brit Awards, in doing so imploring Scotland to remain part of the union ahead of the independence referendum.

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield is famous for performing Bowie’s “Space Oddity” while floating around the space station. He was a master of reinvention, who kept getting it right. David Bowie was a genius.

Yet “Blackstar” ends not with a ballad but an anthem, “I Can’t Give Everything Away”, with a hint of New Wave dance layered with bold, poised blasts of saxophone, electric guitar and Bowie’s voice.
