World of Warcraft patch will let you switch sides for PvP encounters

This is obviously problematic for world PvP, since it can be hard for Horde players to quest without getting swarmed by a horde (heh) of Alliance, but it is also a serious issue for Battlegrounds, which works on a queuing system. Some players value their faction pride highly and freely use the /spit command to degrade enemy corpses before slaying another dirty gnome or tauren.

For those who are unfamiliar with “World of Warcraft“, the game’s community is divided into two factions: the honorable Alliance and the scrappy Horde. Mercenary Mode allows you to take a spot on the “enemy” team if there is one, allowing you to get on with playing the game. And, they should. Players’ experience should always come first. Interacting with them will allow the player to disguise themselves as a member of the opposing faction and fight as one of them for the session. In fact, even racial abilities will change for a player mercenary. The Mists of Pandaria expansion introduced the Pandaren race, which could choose which faction it wanted to join, but once the choice was made, there was no switching sides. For World of Warcraft, this is now not on the table as “mixed-faction” play is not part of the game’s Mercenary Mode.

The fans are generally disliking it, but Blizzard Entertainment is going to release a new PvP based Mercenary Mode to World of Warcraft in the next update that the game gets.

Mercenary Mode will be out for limited testing soon, and Blizzard plans on making it widely available to its entire playerbase shortly afterwards.
