Holocaust survivor Israel Kristal was confirmed by Guinness World Records on Friday as the planet’s oldest living man, having graced the earth for 112 years and 178 days.
The Head of Records for Guinness, Marco Frigatti went to the Kristal household in Israel on March 11 and awarded the survivor with the certificate.
According to the Jerusalem Post, he said he did not know the secret for a long life, but believed everything was “determined from above ” . He also stated that he had seen many men who were better off than him, financially, appearance wise, health wise, but he is the only one living through such an age. All we have to do is work as hard as we can and rebuild what is lost.
Mr Kristal, who was born on 15 September 1903 into a Jewish Orthodox family, survived the First World War despite being separated from his parents. He lived through World War I and survived World War II in the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau where his first wife and two children died.
The oldest living woman is Susannah Mushatt Jones of Brooklyn, New York, who is 115 years and 249 days old. During the Nazi occupation of Poland he was confined to the ghetto there and later sent to the Auschwitz and other concentration camps. When Allied forces arrived in May 1945, he weighed only 81lbs, the Guinness World Records reported.
Kristal succeeds 112-year-old Yasutaro Kaoide, who died earlier this month.
He remarried, and in 1950, he emigrated with his wife and their son to Israel. “When I ran out, he replaced it”, she said.
When asked during a 2014 interview about the dietary secret for long life, Kristal said, “There wasn’t always food in the camps. I ate what I got.
Israel Kristal is now 112 years and 179 days old as of 12th of March 2016. I eat to live; I don’t live to eat.
