World Teachers’ Day: ‘Governments must take urgent action to address chronic
As Ken Blanchard said, the role of a teacher is even more important than might have been imagined. The United Nations’ Organisation has since 1994 set aside October 5 to commemorate the work of teachers and the organisations that represent them in their efforts to provide quality education.

The United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO), says about 12.6 million primary teachers are required globally if the 2020 goal of universal primary education is to be achieved.
For every 100 children of age to start school today, there will be 142 in 2030. This will be done through various measures including global cooperation around teacher training in developing countries, especially the least developed countries and small island developing states. Within the goal of inclusive and equitable quality education there are 10ten targets, ranging from universalising early childhood education opportunities to closing the achievement gaps in all countries.
It is a day on which students, parents and community members can demonstrate their appreciation for the contributions that teachers have made to the community. “The ways our teachers are working through the reform are being noted beyond UNRWA”, said Caroline Pontefract, Director of Education at UNRWA.
“Being well-trained, dedicated, enthusiastic and interactive, our teachers are reshaping the future of our school children”. National teacher trade unions will participate in a major conference-debate to discuss teachers’ involvement in the education policymaking process.

World Teachers Day-2015 will be observed across the country on Monday as elsewhere in the world with the slogan, “Empowering teachers, building sustainable societies”. “We will ensure that teachers and educators are empowered, adequately recruited, well-trained, professionally qualified, motivated and supported within well-resourced, efficient and effectively governed systems”.
