According to San Diego police, Gomez was also wounded in the gun battle.
A suspect was in custody, CBS San Diego affiliate KFMB-TV reported, adding that he was shot and was being treated at a hospital.
She also said video was recovered from the officers’ body cameras.
San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told reporters Friday that the 52-year-old was taken into custody and is in critical condition from a gunshot wound but is expected to survive. Zimmerman said Saturday that it was still unclear if they stopped for pedestrians or motorists in the blue-collar neighborhood of southeastern San Diego.
San Diego police have released the name of a suspect arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of one police officer and wounding of a second officer.
However, he was arrested on an outstanding warrant, and it’s not yet clear whether he was involved in the shooting or not. He has not yet been charged. According to Zimmerman, investigators are trying to work out whether he was involved in the incident.
Zimmerman, who worked with DeGuzman before she was elevated to chief in 2014, said she informed DeGuzman’s wife 13 years ago that he survived the stabbing. Chief Zimmerman said that she knew DeGuzman and described him as someone who always talked about his family.
