Tennis: Wozniacki to face Osaka in Tokyo final was posted in Sports of TheNews International – https://www.thenews.com.pk on September 24, 2016 and was last updated on September 24, 2016.
Wozniacki, who won the title in 2010 and reached the final in 2014, looked set for a comfortable win but Suarez Navarro reeled off four straight games to take the second set.
Getting a step closer to the top 20 and on the way to her 24th career title, the 26-year old from Odense will now face fan favourite and home player Naomi Osaka, who fought back against Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and secured a spot in the final by winning 1-6 6-3 6-2 and reaching the first WTA final of her career.
“We’ve played so many matches everywhere on every surface, it’s always a great challenge against her.”, Radwanska said.
The Pole had her chance at victory in the second set but failed to serve out the match with a 5-3 lead.
Wozniacki improves to 4-1 in 2016 against the Top 10 with the win, but just 3-7 in deciding sets.
At the Guangzhou Open, Serbia’s former world number one Jelena Jankovic needed one hour 44 minutes to beat rising star Ana Konjuh 7-5 7-6 (9/7) to reach the final where she will come up against Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko following her 6-4 6-2 win over Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit.
Third seed Czech Thomas Berdych, who returned to action after his withdrawal from the US Open due to appendicitis, scraped into the quarterfinals through a tough three-setter against Russia’s Andrey Kuznetsov 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4). Berdych saw off French qualifier Alexandre Sidorenko 7-6 (7/5), 6-4. The 28-year-old has been battered by injuries this season.
Second-seeded Radwanska, of Poland, hit eight aces in overpowering the Puerto Rican 6-2, 6-3.
Wozniacki served out, and will meet either Yulia Putintseva or Magda Linette in the quarterfinals.
