Wozniacki refuses to douse retirement talk

Caroline Wozniacki, a two-time runner-up in Queens and one-time finisher in the city’s marathon, ran all over Anastasija Sevastova, 6-0, 6-2, after Sevastova rolled her right ankle, stumbled and fell to the ground in the second game of the first set. “But for now, I’m just here to play this tournament”, she added.

In the most unlikely, yet fitting semifinal, Kerber and Wozniacki are in search for the title and No. 1 ranking.

Like Wozniacki, Kerber is of Polish extraction, and she hopes that one day she will get to number one, just not this weekend.

Now in the semis, Kerber is one match away from facing Serena Williams for a blockbuster final that would determine who exits the US Open with the No. 1 ranking.

In Wuhan, Wozniacki would also participate in local activities to promote the Wuhan Marathon, an global sports event new to the central Chinese city.

Sevastova spoke about the difficulties after coming out of retirement at the start of past year. The latter point really implies that she could be going out in the very next round. By match point, Wozniacki committed five unforced errors.

Wozniacki moves into Thursday’s semifinal round opposite Angelique Kerber, who could overtake Serena Williams for No. 1 in the world if she wins this tournament.

Kerber’s previous semi-final appearance at the US Open was in 2011, when she lost to Australian Samantha Stosur.

“Great memories, it is always on my mind”, Vinci said.

The 26-year-old refused to knock back her father’s opinion after reaching her first Grand Slam semi-final in two years.

Kerber says she’s trying to deflate the pressure of possibly being No. 1 and only worrying about the next opponent.

The risky Dane looked to be heading for a rare double bagel, but Sevastova held serve to huge cheers in the fifth game of the second set.

“The key of the match was the first set.it was really close and tough”, said Kerber, who can supplant Williams atop the world rankings if the American fails to reach Saturday’s final.

It’s a rare ruling in Grand Slam tennis, especially at a critical juncture, although there was, of course, the most famous foot fault of all on the very same court.

After watching Sevastova crash to the court and then get up, Wozniacki said she had taken no chances with a spot in the semi-finals on the line. With Keys, she needs the win to buck the trend of middle-round losses in Grand Slams. She’s hit 65.8 percent of first deliveries in, winning 69 percent of those points.

“I think that’s kind of recharged my batteries”. Still, her varied game, filled with slices and drop shots and net rushes, gave Kerber fits for most of the first set. “Today was a tough match and I was tight in the end and right now I’m in the quarterfinals and a year ago the final, so what do I have to say?” “It’s something I’ll need to figure out at the end of the year”, Vinci said in Italian, with a laugh. “He’s an “A” list celebrity, but I don’t feel like it”. Vinci also won a U.S. Open doubles title in 2012 with Sara Errani – on Louis Armstrong Stadium, where she played Friday.

This is the fourth time Vinci has made the round of 16 at the U.S. Open – she’s done it just three times total at the other majors.

“I just can cook – or I don’t cook, actually; my mom has been cooking”, Wozniacki told the press after a fourth round upset of No.8 seed Madison Keys.

“I had some tough matches against her in the past”, Wozniacki said.
