Wrong-way driver killed in crash with highway trooper

According to the Highway Patrol, Trooper Motsick came upon an eastbound ambulance that was traveling from Billings, Montana to Rapid City, South Dakota.

The Trooper Motsick is in stable condition with no life threatening injuries and is a 15-year veteran with the patrol.

The Trooper involved in the crash is now in stable condition. Westika sustained fatal injuries on scene.

Motsick was driving behind an ambulance in his patrol auto on Thursday when the report of a wrong-way driver came over the radio, according to the release. Westika died at the scene. The trooper had no time to react and the two vehicles crashed head-on, the release said.

The trooper, whose name has not yet been released, was responding to a report of a Chevrolet Cruze driving westbound in the eastbound lane on Interstate 90.

The crash occurred at mile post 38 on I-90 in the eastbound lanes at 9:32 p.m.

The WHP reports that Motsick was wearing his seat belt, while Westika was not.

The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. WHP is investigating impaired driving as a contributing factor in the crash.
