Gordon, a four time victor at Watkins Glen, will make his 23rd and likely final start at the road course on Sunday. “I think, after last weekend with some of the emotions getting a little high with guys, and coming into this stretch, it could be the most interesting stretch of our schedule, and it certainly could be an opportunity for someone like ourselves to gain a big chunk of points”.

“The thing I’ve learned about the Sprint Cup Series is it doesn’t matter whether somebody needs a win or not”, he said. Their post-race row within the attic door afterwards remnants one of the many resource situations because Cup number all started developing in daily at Watkins Glen in 1986.

That win not only gave Allmendinger a legitimate claim as the best road racer in the garage – Ambrose had earned that but was flat-out beat by Allmendinger at The Glen in 2014 – it was a day that capped an impressive down-and-out comeback with his first career victory. “I can’t believe anybody did that, but he did”. It’s great when you get it right and it’s easy to get it wrong.

“It’s pretty remarkable”, added NASCAR icon Richard Petty, also a six-time road course victor. I didn’t do any shifting, but I did some go-kart racing on road courses. Stewart addressed the incident earlier this week.

“Hell, I’ll take that”, he replied. ‘It went right back to the fact that we lost Kevin. It was something that we pursued heavily. “I’d love to race in the rain”.

It’s not as if Gordon hasn’t had his chances.

This year, the race happens on the anniversary of that death, and a number of drivers will be fighting for spots in this year’s Chase for the Championship. Nothing can replace the four wins Jeff Gordon has at Watkins Glen, but Gordon, too, will bid farewell after this season.

Despite the bad memories now associated with Watkins Glen, Stewart is headed to the track with a positive attitude in what will be his first race there in three years.

Almost a year after NASCAR driver Tony Stewart struck and killed 20-year-old driver Kevin Ward Jr., the victim’s family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit.

There is new information in the wrongful death lawsuit filed against NASCAR star Tony Stewart.

Stewart was indulging his passion for dirt-track racing when he entered his No. 14 Sprint vehicle into the weekly program in Canandaigua. Ward had marijuana in his system at the time of his death, Tantillo said when announcing the grand jury decision.

“You just saw him come in on Monday last week into the shop and was so much more upbeat over the way he ran and had qualified the last two weeks”, Stewart pal Greg Zipadelli said this week.
