WTA Beijing: Muguruza wins title as great year continues

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza, one of the rising stars of women’s tennis, beat Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky to win the China Open on Sunday, her biggest title to date. On the women’s side, it will be the victor of Ana Ivanovic versus. Timea Bacsinszky, against the victor of Garbiñe Muguruza against Agnieszka Radwanska.

This year’s China Open missed the biggest names in the game after Maria Sharapova withdrew with a left forearm injury and top-ranked Serena Williams pulled out to heal from a series of injuries and the heartbreak of losing in his U.S. Open bid. However at the Wuhan Premier last week, she was back-though forced to retire in the final against Venus Williams. “I don’t know”, she said, pausing in disbelief.

The victory als earns Muguraza a spot in the WTA Tour finals in Singapore later this month. Besides breaking her opponent’s serve on six occasions, she annihilated Lucic-Baroni’s first serve in the deciding set to move on in style.

The second still saw Bacsinzky leading the way but Muguruza was on point to find her moment to take back the lead. Muguruza didn’t have ease going against her but managed to win in three sets to then face Bacsinzky.

“I was really nervous before the match, because I knew I could get to Singapore and it was also my birthday”, Muguruza said.

Muguruza turned 22 a few days ago and became the youngest player to win a title at this level or higher since a 21-year-old Petra Kvitova captured the WTA Finals crown in Istanbul in 2011.

Like Muguruza, Bacsinszky will embark on new ranking territory next week in cracking the top ten for the first time, only the third non-naturalised Swiss to do so behind Martina Hingis and Patty Schnyder.
