Bryan then explained the six teams in the tag division would participate in a tournament, starting with this episode of Smackdown, that will culminate at Backlash in the crowning of new Tag Team Champions.

With the recent WWE brand extension bringing both the Women’s Championship and Tag Team Championship to Monday Night Raw, SmackDown! hasn’t an equivalent to those titles, much like how Raw had to create the Universal Championship as the top-tier title.

The show kicked off with the tag team division and the Women’s division standing inside the middle of the ring.

Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan then made their entrance and explained they would be giving opportunities on Smackdown. The tag team division and the Women’s division were all excited about the fact.

WWE Backlash will take place on Sunday, September 11, 2016, from the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Virginia.

SmackDown also performed quite well this week, although the WWE was not able to retain all of the Raw audience. Tuesday on a very special edition of SmackDown Live, Commissioner Shane McMahon and General Manager Daniel Bryan announced the creation of two new SmackDown Live exclusive championship titles!

During the event, Nikki Bella, Alexa Bliss, Carmella, Becky Lynch, Naomi and Natalya will compete in a Six Pack Challenge which will determine the first ever Smackdown Women’s Champion.

Already two teams – The Uso brothers and the American Alpha had advanced in the tournament.
