One of the protesters is Ammon Bundy, the 40-year-old son of Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, who was at the center of an armed, anti-government standoff with authorities in 2014 over grazing rights on public lands. “But just as all people have the right to defend themselves, that’s exactly what that means”, said Ammon Bundy, a spokesman for the group.

“I understand the land needs to be used wisely, but that’s what we as stewards need to do”. In 2012 local ranchers Dwight and Steve Hammond were each sentenced to a year in jail for multiple counts of arson in the Malheur National Forest, a federal wildlife refuge adjoining their land. The two were convicted three years ago and served time – the father three months, the son one year.

Having broken into an unoccupied building following a protest on Saturday (local time), the group says they refuse to leave and “will be here as long as it takes”.

Bundy and his group of armed men aren’t taking the new sentencing lightly, telling The Oregonian they are willing to fight and die to protect their right to manage land. “No matter what your leader says … you need to draw your own conclusions”.

Talking to reporters on Sunday, he said of the park headquarters, “We intend to use it”.

Following a rally by around 300 people Saturday in the town of Burns, a group of protesters advanced on the federal reserve 50 miles (80 kilometers) to the southeast, where wild horses, pronghorns (an antelope-like mammal) and other creatures roam free.

It’s unclear how many protesters are at the refuge, but Bundy says they are planning to stay indefinitely.

Protesters told the Oregonian newspaper they have as many as 100 supporters in the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, which is operated by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

He said that the wildlife refuge had expanded at the expense of ranchers and miners. “It’s a time to stand up and come to Harney County”, where Burns is located.

Bundy told CNN some of the occupiers were armed.

Cliven Bundy previously galvanized conservative critics of the federal government after a standoff with agents from the Bureau of Land Management, who attempted to confiscate cattle he had illegally grazed on federal land since 1993.

“And if it is continued, it will put the people in poverty”.

An ad hoc militia seized control of the government-managed M, on Friday, vowing that they would hunker down in the building for “several years”, according to a video Sarah Dee Spurlock posted Saturday to Facebook. “Steven Hammond was also found guilty of committing a second arson in 2006”. Dwight and Steven Hammond run the ranch, and so they are the recipients of the charges.
