The community is again being warned not to entertain these calls; if you have a problem with the IRS they will not contact you in this manner.

An IRS spokesman told 10News the IRS would never contact someone out of the blue.

According to Brandon Presley, who serves as the Public Service Commissioner for DeSoto County and the Northern District of Mississippi, the victim will receive a call from someone who claims to be from the IRS. Please add “IRS telephone scam” to the comments of your complaint. These IRS impersonators are calling up their targets, unsuspecting taxpayers and often immigrants, and demanding that they pay taxes they don’t even owe, by either loading money on a prepaid card or sending it via a wire transfer.

Scare tactics are being used to intimidate them to feel like they must act immediately or risk going to jail. Scammers ask for payments to be sent via Money Gram or Western Union.

-Be skeptical of what a caller claims he or she can do if you refuse to meet their demand. “The agency also won’t ask for a credit card number over the phone”.

These scam artists may threaten police arrest, deportation or license revocation and leave “urgent” callback requests, sometimes through “robo-calls”, via phone or email.
