‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ hits $65 million, ‘Alice through the Looking Glass’ flops
Both of the new films released Memorial Day Weekend topped the box office charts, but are separated by an estimated $37 million.

“X-Men: Apocalypse”, 20th Century Fox’s latest film involving the mutant heroes, sprang into action Thursday night, bringing in an estimated $8.2 million.
“X-Men” easily won the weekend, with an estimated four-day gross of $80 million in the USA and Canada, according to the data firm ComScore. Alice in Wonderland opened in 2010 to an incredible $114 million domestic box office take, but the sequel failed to generate any heat over its first four days in release.
Whether you want to blame it on Johnny Depp’s incredibly poor publicity timing, or the poor word of mouth coming out of reviews, there’s no getting past the fact that Alice Through The Looking Glass looks like a bust.
“We’re very happy with this result as we introduce new characters in the X-Men universe”, Fox’ Chris Aronson said in a press release.
Various sources expected the film to make roughly $90 million, but momentum slowed down following other weekend activities among audiences.
“It’s a disappointing result”, Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis told the Associated Press. “We have embarked on a branded tent-pole strategy that makes big bets”. For Memorial Day weekend, “Captain America: Civil War” pulled in a decent $15 million, adding to an already impressive $372 million so far domestically. Director Bryan Singer talks about the state-of-the-art technology they used in filming the scene.
“There’s no reason to complain about an $80 million four-day weekend”, says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore.
Jennifer Lawrence poses with James MacAvoy and Oscar Isaac at a screening of “X-Men: Apocalypse” in London May 9, 2016. And as we know, nothing helps a big studio ignore movie critics like ticket sales.
