‘X-men Apocalypse’ rules, ‘Alice’ struggles at holiday weekend box office
Walt Disney Co.’s “Alice” knocked back a bit too much pishsalver potion over the Memorial Day weekend, shrinking her take at the North American box office and falling far short of analysts’ predictions.

The Bryan Singer-directed X-Men filled the multiplexes with a cast of mutants that included newcomers Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan, along with franchise marquee names such as Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender.
X-Men: Apocalypse collected $65 million and is expected to reach up to $76 million in the upcoming days.
In second place domestically is “Alice Through the Looking Glass”, Disney’s sequel to its 2010 film “Alice in Wonderland”. Scathing reviews combined with the domestic abuse charges brought by Amber Heard against Johnny Depp likely combined to keep potential moviegoers away from Alice Through the Looking Glass.
The latest “Alice” installment cost Disney about $170 million to make, the Wall Street Journal adds. Heard, who had filed for divorce, appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday with a bruise on her right cheek. His personal life is going from bad to worse, and now his movie Alice has bombed at the box office.
On the other hand, Johnny Depp’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, which was also released over the holiday weekend, has somewhat tanked at the box office.
Finally the well-received “The Nice Guys” failed to conquer as enthusiasm was low and showed once again the lack of box office pull Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe have. It cost $170 million to produce – nearly as much as “X-Men: Apocalypse”.
Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore, said it was hard to quantify how much the fortunes of Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” turned Friday afternoon when news of Heard’s allegations spread.
Captain America: Civil War took fourth spot, with comedy Neighbors: Sorority Rising rounding out the top five.
The highest-grossing movie relese of 2016 goes to Captain America: Civil War, in which the movie has earned more than $1 billion worldwide.
“We’re very happy with this result as we introduce new characters in the X-Men universe”, Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson told The Hollywood Reporter.
