Xbox One TV DVR Requires An External HDD To Work

The DVR update is coming as part of the “New Xbox One Experience” which is a revamp of the dashboard on the console.

Given the limited storage available in Xbox One consoles that come with a 500GB internal hard drive, managing data can become excruciatingly difficult for gamers.

The Xbox One and the Xbox 360 in their current iterations work perfectly with nearly all USB drives or external hard drives, and while Seagate’s offering might be Xbox-centric, it offers no extra functionality apart from a massive upscale from the market price for external hard drives with similar specifications.

“You need an external hard-drive specifically for DVR because we want to keep the [storage] paths optimised between playing games and watching TV”, project lead Richard Irving told GameSpot. The compact and portable Game Drive for Xbox enables users to extend their catalogue of downloaded games and achievements for continued game play on any Xbox One or Xbox 360 console. Microsoft added that a “theoretical” resolution of 1080i should be supported. (However Microsoft has noted that the tablet feature will only work with Windows tablets and not Apple or Android devices.).

According to Major Nelson, the Game Drive is the “only external drive designed exclusively” for Microsoft’s consoles.
