Xi Jinping Pledges $2 Billion To Fight Global Poverty

China’s tightly controlled state media has focused heavily on the pomp, ceremony and shows of respect Xi has been treated to in Seattle and then Washington. Currently, most jets that carry Chinese leaders on foreign trips are mobilized after they undergo temporary modifications.

China will launch hundreds of projects to support developing countries reducepoverty over the following five years, Chinese President Xi Jinping announced Saturday at a South-South cooperation roundtable in New York. The airline is responsible for the aircraft’s maintenance and repairs.

Others worry, however, that harmful side effects of China’s rapid industrialization will also make their way into countries receiving Chinese aid.

The release came on the same day President Barack Obama was to host Chinese President Xi Jinping for his first official visit to the U.S.

But Xi stressed China’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the South China Sea.

Noting that the China-US relationship is one of the most important bilateral ties in the world, Xi pledged to push it forward along the right track. He said China would seek to increase the fund to $12 billion by 2030. More than 150 heads of state and government attend the summit, which aims at formally adopting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to guide the development of the global community over the next 15 years.

Liu said President Xi will join more than 150 world leaders for multilateral meetings at the highest level, of the largest scale and with the greatest significance in recent years.

Thirdly, the Chinese leader said the developing countries should strive for practical development results.

Presidential Communications Operations Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said the administration is determined to fight poverty in the country under its watch, citing sustained development efforts such as the expanded conditional cash transfer program to uplift the conditions of the poor families.

“And China will exempt the debt of the outstanding intergovernmental interest-free loans due by the end of 2015 owed by the relevant least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing countries”.

Jordan Minister Imad Najib Fakhoury made an impassioned plea at the United Nations summit for the world’s countries to take in more Syrian refugees to help his country which has been overwhelmed by those fleeing the conflict there. And the executive director for China at the US Chamber of Commerce, Jeremie Waterman, termed it a “a clear statement” on an issue of critical importance to the future of relations between the two countries.

Still, our Chinese diplomat would feel compelled to highlight the successes – so far at least – of Xi’s visit to the USA, including a full-on state dinner at the White House. As Xi assures USA audiences that China will not devalue the yuan and allow market forces to steer the troubled currency, it seems time to ponder if Deng’s lessons need to be persevered with a little longer. It has widely been seen as a way for China to dilute the influence of the United States and Japan.

Up to 200 million Chinese still fall under the global poverty line, particularly in rural areas, but most have benefitted economically from the country’s rapid ascent into middle-class lifestyles.

Rouhani also linked violence against man and violence against nature, saying that “terrorists, in fact, tend to grow and thrive in lands deprived and damaged by environmental disasters and easily pour across borders like haze”.
