Xi pledges stronger support to eliminate poverty by 2020

Issuing a statement one day ahead of the worldwide Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the ILO estimated that 780 million working women and men were now not able to earn enough to lift themselves and their families above the 2 US dollar a day poverty line, which is around one third of total employment in developing countries.

President Xi says eliminating poverty has always been a common goal across countries in the world.

The poverty rate was reduced from 53.2 percent in 2004 to 13.5 percent in 2014, with Cambodia ranked the world’s 4th most successful country in poverty reduction by achieving CMDGs poverty reduction target well before the end of 2015 along with four other targets, including child mortality rate, maternal health, and so forth, he added.

In the past 15 years, China has lifted more than 600 million people out of poverty, accounting for about 70 percent of those lifted worldwide.

Administrator of the UN Development Program Helen Clark delivers a speech on the 2015 Global High Level Forum on Poverty Reduction and Development convenes in the Great Hall of the People, in China’s capital city of Beijing.

China has provided an aid worth almost 63 billion USA dollars to 166 countries and global organizations.

The president said poverty alleviation will be a major part of China’s post-2015 agenda.

While striving to reduce poverty at home, China has also actively supported the cause in other developing countries.

This can be the first generation to witness a world without extreme poverty, where all people – not only the powerful and the privileged – can participate and contribute equally, free of discrimination and want, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon declared on Friday, urging global action to fully implement the newly-adopted goals of the UN 2030 Agenda. “And it has made the biggest contribution to the reduction of extreme poverty in this world”, he said.

Saturday also marks China’s second National Poverty Relief Day.

Indeed, for UNESCO, the eradication of poverty is a cornerstone in the fight for human rights and human dignity.

“By 2015, the Millennium Development Goals will be basically completed in China”. It will also invest at least $12 billion in the least-developed countries by 2030, and relieve debts owed by these countries due in 2015. The policy of the state is development, to lift the people out of poverty, to move to a modern society.

“Despite the achievements, China remains the world’s biggest developing country, and narrowing the urban-rural gap remains a big challenge for us”, Xi said.
