San Francisco: Yahoo launched a next-generation messaging platform Thursday in an ambitious bid to steal a march on a crowded field, as rumors swirled that the Internet pioneer is considering selling its core business.

“We built this not just as a single app but as a platform that allows messaging to be integrated with other products in Yahoo”. You can log in with your phone number or your old Yahoo Mail account and it will scan your contacts to find you friends who are also using the application. Yahoo says you can send “literally hundreds of photos at a time, ‘ and that they will appear in the conversation ‘almost instantly”.

Avoid potential embarrassment with the unsend feature.

Other new features include the ability to “unsend” a message, deleting it from the conversation for all participants, “likes” for individual messages, and the ability to search for and send GIFs from Tumblr. No more sender’s remorse!

Austin Shoemaker, senior director of product management for Yahoo Messenger, told Mashable the company has plans to add a lot more features in future updates, including incorporating Messenger into more Yahoo services.

Yahoo Messenger desktop users (on the Web or in Yahoo Mail on the desktop) can also enjoy Account Key, which uses push notifications to provide fast and secure access to your account from the Yahoo Messenger mobile app. It frees you from memorizing complicated passwords, and makes signing-in as easy as tapping a button.

Of course, GIFs are bigger part of messaging than ever, so Skype now allows you to pull in GIFs straight from Tumblr – taking on Facebook and Wire’s tight Giphy implementation. Yahoo Messenger in Yahoo Mail on the desktop is rolling out globally starting today. Now the app is available in English, but the company promised it will be available in local languages soon.
