Yahoo releases OTT video search app

The new app is aimed at cord-cutters who might be struggling with the myriad streaming options in what is being called the Peak TV era.

It would certainly be a plus to find the likes of Feeln, go90, Noggin, SeeSo, Sling TV, Stream, Pluto TV, Tubi TV, Vessel, Vimeo or Watchable on Yahoo Video Guide.

“You can then start watching instantly by tapping a playback button that redirects you to the right app on your phone, including HBO, Netflix, Amazon and Hulu”, says Yahoo. It will provide with suitable options based on a user’s preferences, once a user selects what they like, the Yahoo Guide App will bring up the streaming services that house that particular movie or TV show.

Once the users of the newly-launched Yahoo video Guide app have found the video-streaming service their favorite TV show or movie is appearing on, they can launch the titles directly in the video apps that they have already installed on their mobile handsets.

Outside of the big-name streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, HBO and Hulu, Yahoo Video Guide also supports services like Showtime, YouTube, and dozens of TV networks. So, for example, a GIF of two people kissing might point you to romances, while things on fire points to action titles. In these latter sections, content is broken down further by genre like “documentary”, “science fiction”, “romance”, “animated”, etc. Each title comes with a summary, a rating pulled from Rotten Tomatoes, and the title’s streaming cost, as well as places to watch the selection for free (if available).

That said, the user interface on Yahoo Video Guide is appealing with simple navigation and an emphasis on thumbnail imagery.

The Time Inc. distribution network, which was created in 2013, will also house videos from Hulu, Yahoo and Zealot, in addition to videos from 15 other partner sites.

Yahoo’s new app also wants to help you decide what to watch.
