Yahoo announced Friday, June 10, that it will be ending its old Messenger desktop client on August 5 in order to focus its efforts on the application’s new version. So “the new Yahoo Messenger” as the company puts it, is the way forward for both Yahoo! and its users.
Also in the same post announcing the discontinuation of the Yahoo Messenger desktop client, the company has chose to discontinue “Yahoo Recommends” from September 1, 2016.
The software for the Yahoo Messenger app made its way onto the Internet scene back in the late 1990s.
After August 5th, anyone still using the legacy Messenger will no longer be able to log in or send messages.
The change will affect all those who are on the Messenger app on the Windows, Mac, Android and iOS platform.
After 18 years of service, Yahoo has officially announced its decision to “kill off” its old Yahoo Messenger platform. Their goal is to deliver the best service to users.
Yahoo in itself has been in a lot of trouble lately, and the company is having a major financial crisis.
The new app integrates features from Yahoo-owned Flickr, Tumblr and Xobni. “This complete revamp brings users an incredibly fast, handsome and smart way to send – and unsend – messages, photos and animated GIFs in 1:1 and group conversations”, according to the blog post. It also supports group conversations.
Yahoo chief architect Amotz Maimon said the company had “outlined a plan for streamlining the business and focusing on (their) strengths across seven core consumer products: Mail, Search, Tumblr, News, Sports, Finance and Lifestyles”.
