Yankees ace Tanaka allows 4 homers in an inning against Rays

Masahiro Tanaka is seeking to notch a career high in victories as he takes for mound for the visiting New York Yankees on Wednesday night in the second of a three-game series versus the Tampa Bay Rays.

Sanchez gave the Yankees a 5-2 lead with his drive off Brad Boxberger (4-3).

The Yankees added another run in the frame, but Tanaka – who had never given up more than three homers in a game in his major league career – surrendered four in a span of six batters.

New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez scored 3 runs, drove in 5 RBI’s and blasted two home runs in an 11-5 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. It was only the 10th time in his career that he has allowed nine or more hits in a game and just the fourth time he’s allowed seven or more runs in a start.

For the goal of illustrating just how absurd that stretch was for Sanchez, if he were to sustain that level of production over a 162-game schedule, he would finish the year with 67 doubles, 121 home runs and 202 RBI.

“That’s what this club does”, manager Joe Girardi said. “It’s been fun to watch”.

Michael Pineda lasted just 5 1/3 innings but recorded 11 strikeouts in a no-decision Tuesday as the Yankees downed the Rays 5-3. He has six home runs and 12 RBIs in eight games this season against the Rays.

Braves 5, Mets 4 – At New York: Julio Teheran pitched seven more sparkling innings and last-place Atlanta blunted New York’s bid to extend its NL wild-card lead, holding on for a win.

“It’s hard to believe”, Girardi said afterward. “Basically, if you’re the opposing pitcher and you go over the middle of the plate, it’s got a good chance at being damaged [by] him”.

Cobb returned for the second, but he didn’t stay long.

Gary Sanchez isn’t as hot as he was a month ago, but he’s still hitting.250/.313/.533 and 122 wRC+ with five homers in September.

Two more hits ended Cobb’s night after only 1.2 innings as Steve Geltz relieved him, allowing a sacrifice fly by Didi Gregorius that put the Yankees ahead, 7-0. Bobby Wilson hit his seventh home run to start the comeback, and then the Rays went back-to-back-to-back, with Evan Longoria (36), Miller (29) and Corey Dickerson (22) all hitting home runs off Tanaka.

And speaking of pretty impressive, Butler – in his sixth day as a Yankee – is fairly awed by the little he’s seen of Sanchez.

On September 9, in a game against the Rays, Sanchez caught a pitch and fired it back to second base at 84 miles per hour to catch Corey Dickerson, who had strayed too far away with a lead-off move to end the inning. “Guys that recognize pitches early are usually the most risky hitters”.

Teixeira popped out to end Tuesday’s first inning with runners at second and third.

All five homers the Yankees gave up were solo shots, which helped the Yankees survive.
