Blue Jays third base coach Luis Rivera watches. Blake Parker, the eighth NY pitcher, suddenly became an unlikely closer, and he struck out Kevin Pillar. He left after a leadoff walk and a fly ball by pinch hitter Dioner Navarro that Aaron Judge caught against the top of the right-field wall.

Gardner ran back, jumped and corralled the ball at the top of the fence as he banged into the padding.

The Yankees rushed out to congratulate him and a few minutes later, a replay of the catch drew another ovation from the fans.

Miguel Cabrera finished 4-for-5 with two home runs as the Tigers improved to 5-3 in extra innings and won for the sixth time in last last seven games.

Kluber (15-9) had won his previous seven decisions, a span during which he dominated the way he did while winning the Cy Young Award in 2014.

With the games irrevocably slipping away from the calendar, the Yankees say they focus only on the task at hand today.

For the first time since August 12, the Blue Jays fell out of the top spot in the AL East.

Reliever James Hoyt (1-0) struck out two in 1 1-3 innings for his first major league win. The 29-year-old rookie replaced Brad Peacock, who was called up to replace an injured Dallas Keuchel and made his first start since April 14, 2015.

“I felt like we won the World Series right there”, said Didi Gregorius, whose RBI triple in the eighth inning was a huge hit at the time, as it tied the game 4-4, but it turned out to be just another forgotten highlight in a game full of them.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Mike Trout banged out three hits for the sixth time in his last 11 games and Los Angeles took advantage of rookie Raul Alcantara’s wildness in the opener of a three-game series.

Colon (13-7) improved to 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his last seven starts. Encarnacion reached on an infield single that allowed Bautista to score all with no outs. Tyler Austin, who celebrated his 25th birthday, hit a two-run homer off Sanchez in the seventh inning.

Encarnacion hit his 37th homer into the second deck for Toronto and tied his career high with 111 RBIs.

He has homered in five straight games, tying Harmon Killebrew and Marty Cordova for the longest streak in Twins history. He allowed a solo shot to Starlin Castro in the third and an RBI single to Brian McCann later in the frame but held the damage there.

Yankees: RHP Michael Pineda (6-11, 5.10) pitches against Tampa Bay.

The Yankees moved within four and a-half games of the Jays. They closed within 2 1/2 games of Baltimore for the second AL wild card and are 4 1/2 behind first-place Boston in the AL East. That was the first time under 30,000 since 2004.

GIANTS 3, ROCKIES 2: Kelby Tomlinson hit a one-out, tiebreaking single in the ninth and San Francisco rallied to beat Colorado. Santiago Casilla pitched the ninth for his 31st save. He got Gerardo Parra to hit into a double play to end the game. “It doesn’t matter who’s hitting”.

After Brandon Crawford struck out, Tomlinson lined an 0-2 fastball into left field to bring home Posey with the decisive run. He had two RBIs on Tuesday and has a career-high 112 on the year.

BREWERS 12, CUBS 5: Jonathan Villar homered to start a five-run first inning against Jason Hammel, and Milwaukee cooled off Chicago.

Three different pitchers earned saves in the series, and four have saves in New York’s last six wins.

With the bases loaded with O’s, Chad Green strikes out his 3rd batter of the inning to escape trouble.

Kenley Jansen pitched a flawless ninth to earn his 42nd save in 48 chances.
