Yankees can’t complete sweep in 4-1 loss to Orioles

“I was real smart with Chris Tillman pitching”.

Mark Teixeira, who missed three games after fouling a ball off his left foot during Saturday’s loss to the Boston Red Sox, was back in the New York Yankees lineup for Wednesday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.

“I just knew that we needed to go and get a win today and go home with a win”, Tillman said. All-Star catcher Matt Wieters is just 7-for-43 against him with three walks and 11 strikeouts.

With a stomach bug ravaging Baltimore’s clubhouse, manager Buck Showalter reminded the Orioles on Tuesday to wash their hands and noted that “it seems like it’s another guy every day picks it up”. He held the Orioles to one hit in nine at-bats with runners in scoring position and recorded six of his strikeouts in those instances.

“I just fell down”, Sabathia said. “That was really easy. But I like playing, so it would be better being in there”.

Tillman struck out seven and walked two. “There’s been ups and downs”, Showalter said. “I’ve been awful. The only thing I can do the last two months is try to be healthy and get hot”. Sabathia is now 5-7 with a 3.94 ERA through 16 outings and he has given up just under a hit per inning.

“Team wins are important”, Tillman said. Hopefully I can stay on the field. The Yankees scored in the second when Gregorius doubled to left, took third on Alex Rodriguez’s fly out and trotted in on Castro’s single to left.Baltimore added its final two runs with two outs in the seventh.

“Mike was great tonight”, Teixeira said. “That was fun and exciting to be a part of”. But without a couple guys that hit the ball out of the ballpark, it makes it a lot more hard when you’re missing that.

The Orioles managed only one hit against Sabathia between the second and sixth innings, although the lefty committed a throwing error and then a balk in the sixth, when he stumbled to the mound while delivering a pitch to advance Chris Davis to second.

The Orioles (53-40) played without Chris Davis and Manny Machado, who sat with stomach viruses. J.J. Hardy singled in two first-inning runs and Jonathan Schoop knocked out Sabathia with a two-run single in the seventh.

Brad Brach pitched a scoreless eighth and Zach Britton pitched a hitless ninth for his 30th save.

Sabathia (5-8) has four losses and two no-decisions in his last six starts. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article. With a season-high, four-game winning streak, the Yanks (48-46) have moved two games over.500 for the first time since April 12. He has never pitched vs. San Francisco. Green was recalled before the game from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and RHP Nick Goody was optioned to the minor league club. Manager Joe Girardi said Green was with the team to provide distance since RHPs Dellin Betances and Anthony Swarzak were unavailable.

Showalter is hoping to get Jones, who’s out with a back spasm, Wieters, who has a bruised right foot, and Rickard, who injured his right thumb trying to field Brett Gardner’s triple in the first inning of Wednesday night’s game, back shortly. NY 3B Chase Headley (personal) was not in the starting lineup for the second straight day but entered as a pinch hitter. “I don’t remember a whole lot days in my life that were worse”. I think they’re responding especially after we lost two to start out this homestand.
