He set season highs for innings and pitches (114), striking out six and walking one. I just thought that was kind of random and then obviously they made the announcement after that.

All-Star Mark Teixeira belted a pair of solo homers and Stephen Drew added one of his own as New York opened a 5-2 lead and withstood a ninth-inning comeback attempt for its fourth win in its last six at home. The 7.2 innings marked the longest start of the season for Tanaka (5-3).

“That second inning when he gave up the runs, he made a couple of mistakes”. He finished with a flourish by retiring the final 13 hitters and 18 of the final 19. Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury had a two-run single in his second game off the disabled list since suffering a right knee injury.Ellsbury also reached on a throwing error by Semien, which allowed New York’s final two runs to score. The second one … He had missed just two games all year before the sore calf sidelined him on Wednesday.

Chavez suffered his second straight loss Friday, giving up four runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings against Seattle. He’s received no injection, he said, and has just been resting and icing it. “Early in the year, those pitches were getting swung at and onto the ground, and now they’re getting taken for balls and I have to fight back into the count”.

Figueroa doubled twice in his Yankees debut Thursday, helping spark the offense behind Masahiro Tanaka in a 6-2 win over the Oakland Athletics.

Oakland got all its runs in the second, when Josh Reddick reached on catcher’s interference by Brian McCann, and Billy Butler and Mark Canha hit RBI doubles as Tanaka left balls over the plate while pitching from the stretch.

NOTES: Oakland LHP Scott Kazmir did some light throwing Thursday after leaving Wednesday’s start after the third inning with left triceps tightness. New York INF Brendan Ryan (back) began a rehab assignment with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and was 1-for-3 while playing five innings at third base.

First baseman Ike Davis held out his arms, maintaining the ball was foul, and manager Bob Melvin came out to discuss the call with umpires.

Headley reiterated that he doesn’t expect it to be anything serious but says it’s more “realistic” that he would return for the series in Boston this weekend. Ryan will continue his rehab Friday with Double-A Trenton.
