Yankees outlast Orioles, 3

It was Ryan’s first double of the year. The Orioles remain four games in back of the Yankees, who also took two of three from Seattle over the weekend to improve to 9-4 in their last 13 contests overall and 18-7 in their last 25 home games.

Jacoby Ellsbury led off the first with a double off Wei-Yin Chen.

This is the first time the Yankees and Orioles have faced off since last month, and they’re not slated to face off again until September, but the Yankees only have one goal in mind this week; win their fifth series in a row.

Starter Nathan Eovaldi was, as usual, decent-not-great while the bullpen locked things down and the offense strung several hits together early.

An inning later, the Orioles finally broke through getting consecutive two-out RBI singles by catcher Matt Wieters and shortstop J.J. Wieters was caught in a rundown for the final out. In 5.2 innings of work, Eovaldi only surrendered two runs over four hits, while walking three and striking out four.

Highlights: – Brendan Ryan-Brendan Ryan!-scored Didi Gregorius in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, doubling home the third run of the game.

The Yankees were set to bat in the bottom of the second inning when the rain began.

Turning point: When the Yankees used what’s pretty much the unfair combo of relievers Dellin Betances (more below) and Andrew Miller to record the last seven outs of the one-run game. In the second, Chase Headley’s double drove in Brian McCann as the Yankees extended their lead to 2-0. But the Yankees failed to bring another run home despite having runners at second and third and nobody out, wasting an opportunity to open up a healthy lead.

Yankees: Carlos Beltran, who came off the disabled list Sunday, was given the night off in order to get Young in the lineup against the left-hander. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium.

The Orioles arrived in New York fresh off their series win in Detroit, a pair of victories that didn’t necessary salvage their season, but definitely stopped the tailspin the team found itself in before the All-Star break. The hard-throwing 25-year-old right-hander has been the beneficiary of excellent run support, but he’s held up his end of the bargain over his last five starts, going 4-1 with a 2.93 ERA.
