Yankees pitcher struck by line drive, leaves game bleeding

The Nuñez hit would score the first run of the game for Minnesota. He was able to walk off the field under his own power, holding a towel to his face to absorb the blood.

There was no immediate word on his exact injuries.

Mitchell joined the staff so the Yankees would have six starters during this period, but the fact that he left in the second inning could prove taxing for the bullpen. Mitchell was taken to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital for a full evaluation.

The team announced that its doctors will continue to monitor Mitchell through Tuesday for concussion symptoms.

Mitchell was replaced by Caleb Cotham, who was just recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

Mitchell, usually a reliever, took the spot start to allow the Yankees’ rotation to get an extra day of rest.

Mitchell is considered the Yankees’ second-best pitching prospect, behind right-hander Luis Severino. It was not immediately clear where the ball struck the pitcher, who had absolutely no time to react to the hard hit drive.
