Yankees’ playoff hopes dealt blow with 6-5 loss to Red Sox

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz might get the night off when the AL East leaders try to finish a four-game sweep of the Yankees at Fenway Park. The Yankees are losers of four straight and seven of their last eight.

Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Betts had the tying single before scoring the go-ahead run and the Red Sox beat the Yankees 6-5 Saturday for their third straight win over NY. Mookie Betts eventually brought the shortstop home to tie the game, and the Red Sox kept putting up hits and advancing runners until Betts and Hanley Ramirez were on second and third with two outs. Bogaerts led off the seventh with his third extra-base hit and second double of the game. Gary Sanchez followed by taking Price deep for his 15th homer and a 3-0 lead.

LeMahieu started the comeback with a one-out double and Carlos Gonzalez singled him home one out later. “But we know it’s going to be tough, so we know we’re going to have to win nearly every game just to try to get back in this thing”. Farrell went with Brad Ziegler to get the 3rd out of the inning.

CINCINNATI – Sean Rodriguez and Josh Bell helped lift Pittsburgh over Cincinnati in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.

Bogaerts came in to Saturday’s game slumping -.255 average since the All-Star break, and 4 for 21 on this homestand. The game made up a rainout on May 10.

Clay Buchholz (7-10) allowed two runs in six innings. Boston could not respond in the bottom of the inning and trailed 5-2.

Bogaerts led off with a double and was advanced to third on David Ortiz’s long fly ball to center field.

Nine Cleveland pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout.

The Red Sox’ bullpen now has a 1.06 ERA in September, the lowest in the majors.

Here’s your one-run win.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Ned Yost posted his 1,000th career victory as manager and Kansas City topped Chicago. They know they’ve rallied before, winning 14 of 20 games before their current three-game losing streak. Yost has a 543-542 record as manager of the Royals.

ATLANTA – Trea Turner homered, had four hits and scored four runs, Max Scherzer won his fifth straight decision and Washington beat Atlanta.

Jeremy Hellickson (12-9) calmly put forth his most dominant start this season.

Farrell also expects to continue using Robbie Ross Jr.in a similar role to Barnes.

Mitchell’s outing looked to be going smoothly until the fifth. The loss dropped the Cardinals two games behind the New York Mets, who now hold the second wild-card spot in the NL.

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Ricky Nolasco pitched six shutout innings to lead Los Angeles to a victory over Toronto at Angel Stadium.

Antonio Bastardo earned the victory. In three of those games, he only gave up one run apiece. He had allowed two runs or fewer in his previous six starts with a 1.93 ERA.

Houston moved into a tie with the Mariners in the American League wild-card standings, three games behind Baltimore.

Ramirez’s homer was his ninth in 16 games.

The Twins took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 11th on a leadoff homer by Bryon Buxton, but Granderson homered leading off the bottom of the inning. The right-hander struck out eight and walked two, leaving after 104 pitches. But in the end it was the very last at bat that proved his undoing, with Xander Bogaerts somehow ripping a pitch that was well off the plate inside and keeping it fair over the Monster for a two-run shot, closing the gap to one run. Every game counts at this point in the season; each loss could mean disaster. We’ve got to win a lot of games.

“He’s played 22 games there this year”, Girardi said, neglecting to mention that eight of those “games” came after late-inning pinch-hitting appearances for the Oakland Athletics, who gave him his last start there on July 5. Pomeranz got his first taste of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry on August 10, when he held NY to one run over 5 1/3 innings but did not factor in the decision. The loss leaves them seven back in the division (which they were never likely to recover and win) and, more importantly, 4.5 back in the wild card race.

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Jon Gray threw a gem in an 8-0 win against the San Diego Padres. NY will see how second baseman Starlin Castro feels, a day after he strained his right hamstring and exited early. Out of the 93 pitches that he threw, 60 were for strikes.
