The offense piled on the runs.

Fernando Rodney (6-5) allowed Eugenio Suarez’s homer in the seventh that gave the Reds a short-lived 4-3 lead but won his first game since the Cubs acquired him from Seattle on August 27.

The Red Sox signed the 31-year-old slugger to a four-year, $88 million contract last November because they believed he was athletic enough to handle the transition to left field.

But Boston skirted danger again after a groundout and Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury’s line out to left fielder Bradley, who nailed the runner trying to score from third after the catch for the inning-ending out. It is also the most by a Boston pitcher against the Yankees at Fenway Park since Pedro Martinez struck out 12 on May 30, 2001.

Jim Rogash/Getty Images Greg Bird rounds the bases after hitting one of five Yankee home runs on Wednesday. Although Ramirez continued his work with infield coach Brian Butterfield by taking grounders at first base on Sunday and Monday, he hasn’t swung a bat since last Wednesday night’s game in Chicago.

1 run, 1 hit, 0 errors, 0 left on. Gregorius singled in a run with the bases jammed and nobody out in the fourth. That was followed by a Stephen Drew double and then a Brett Gardner walk.

Elsewhere, multi-year rebuilding projects permitted teams to allow their young players to struggle over a prolonged period before finding success. Ryan Cook came in for Owens, but that didn’t really change Boston’s fortunes. Beltran welcomed the former Oakland Athletics All-Starreliever to the ballgame by smoking a two-run home run over the Green Monster on Cook’s very first offering, padding the Yankees’ lead with another two tallies. Bird and Gregorius drew walks on either side of a Murphy fly out.

David Ortiz added an RBI double for Boston as he continues his pursuit for 500 career homers. In his last start, he was tagged for a season-high seven in four. “But I think there was some counts I fell into where rather going to an off-speed pitch that got me back on track mechanically, I tried to stick with the fastball and it was a mental lapse on my part and I’ll learn from it”. We’ll also get something from Mookie to make sure he’s comfortable and ready.

A one-out walk of Blake Swihart ended Tanaka’s day after 92 pitches.

Henry Owens finished the night with seven earned runs on six hits with two walks, two strikeouts and two home runs over 1 2/3 innings.

BAILEY’S RETURN: Andrew Bailey said he “felt like normal” during his first big-league game since July 12, 2013, due to shoulder surgery. Alex Rodriguez singled in two runs to chase Owens. The Yankees then tacked on a 13th run in the eighth inning. He went to Dellin Betances with one out and the bases loaded, the Yankees ahead 13-7, in the eighth. He had to go back to the bullpen and bring in Betances. If you’re warming up Miller anyway, why start the ninth with Caleb Cotham?

The series win was the sixth straight for the Yankees at Fenway Park, the first time since 1956-58 that happened. It got way too close for anyone’s liking at the end, but it still goes in the win column.

Xander Bogaerts was really the only bright spot for the Sox in their 13-8 loss to the New York Yankees
