Yanks lose to Giants 2-1 in 12 innings as hopes fade
Mac Williamson singled him in with the go-ahead run.

Mac Williamson smacked a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 12th inning Saturday as the Giants defeated the Yankees 2-1 in NY.
Williamson was involved in many facets of the four-hour, 25-minute marathon.
NY went ahead in the fourth after Didi Gregorius reached on an infield single leading off. Mark Teixeira, in a 1-for-15 slide and dropped to seventh in the batting order for only the third time since 2004, singled to right. Even if Bumgarner did not take the loss – that went to reliever Josh Osich – the Yankees succeeded in making him look if not bad, at least ordinary, reaching on seven hits and three walks in seven innings.
Williamson prolonged things when he struck out against Aroldis Chapman for the first out of the 10th with Grant Green standing on first.
Finally, much to the delight of the many orange-clad Giants fans, Williamson came through, slicing a 1-and-0 slider from Anthony Swarzak (1-1) up the middle.
Beltran – who made a running catch of a Crawford liner with double written all over it in the sixth inning – also believes the Yankees we have seen for the past three weeks are the real Yankees, and the ones we suffered through in the first half of the season are the impostors.
San Francisco loaded the bases in the fourth inning but could not get a run across home plate. “We’ve got to make up ground”. On Friday, he had the game-tying double off Andrew Miller in the eighth, when he got the hit on a full count and fell behind 0-and-2.
It appeared Betances was going to intentionally walk Brandon Crawford with two outs in the 11th and Angel Pagan on third, but his first pitch was wild and went to the backstop.
Crawford made a poor throw home on a relay in the first inning. Cueto is 13-2 with a 2.53 ERA. Starlin Castro followed by flying out to right, ending the threat. He extended his scoreless streak to 11.1 innings.
– Designated hitter Alex Rodriguez was benched Saturday, continuing the trend manager Joe Girardi has set for the 40-year-old when a right-hander’s on the mound. “These guys did a good, terrific job of picking each other up”.
As for the Yankees, they’re 5-1 in their last six game threes of a series, and 5-1 in Eovaldi’s last six home starts. NY (49-48) went hitless in 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position and struck out 12 times in its longest game of the season.
A winning homestand is still possible, but a great one is not after Saturday’s 2-1 loss in 12 innings to the Giants. They have 12 in the last eight games.
Before the marathon ended, both starters settled down after an eventful four innings.
Giants: OF Hunter Pence (hamstring) was 1 for 4 with a double in six innings Saturday for Triple-A Sacramento.
NY went on to load the bases but could not capitalize on this opportunity.
The teams had plenty of opportunities in the first five innings, putting a combined 14 runners on.
Jeff Samardzija had been listed as San Francisco’s starter, but manager Bruce Bochy said his intent all along was to start Johnny Cueto and attributed the mixup to a failure to inform his media relations staff.
“They got a break there, and they deserved it”, Bochy said. There was a little confusion on that.
Panik will take swings and continue baseball activities and we think he ll be playing in a couple days, Bochy said.
Chase Headley walked after Teixeira’s single but Cueto got a strikeout and groundout to limit the Yanks to one run.

Apparently, that s not enough to earn an invitation to join the team for their congratulatory visit to the White House.
