She even got to have a dance with the president.
What was the best part of meeting the president and the first lady? She hollers “YES!” and runs across the room with more agility than expected in someone her age.
In a video Virginia says she still remembers the time before she went to school.
The first lady acts enraptured by Virginia, in awed disbelief as the Commander in Chief informs her that she is 106.
“I was so happy to meet the black president”, she said.
“What’s the secret to still dancing at one-oh-six?” he asked McLaurin as she danced hand-in-hand with Michelle. “A black president… and his black wife”.
“She’s 106?” the president can be heard asking in a video that was uploaded to the White House’s Facebook page late Sunday.
But life for black African Americans like Virginia McLaurin was still restricted.
McLaurin was born in SC in 1909 in a time when the painful memories of slavey was still heavy in the atmosphere and African American kids in the South had next to no prospects. She also made a request on YouTube by uploading a video in December, 2014.
President Barack Obama delivered remarks and took questions Monday morning from the National Governor’s Association. She said she never thought she’d see a black president – and now she’s met one.
“For those of you who think that I’m just a big government insane liberal, you know … we crunch some numbers around here”. Her wish was granted after a year of petition to get her an invitation was started. Watch her original message to the president below.
