– Governor Mark Dayton issued a proclamation declaring October 22, 2016 as Jacob Wetterling Day. That day will mark the 27th anniversary of Jacob’s abduction.
For almost 30 years, strangers prayed and hoped that Jacob Wetterling would come home.
On Sunday morning, mourners gathered at the College of St. Benedict St. John’s in Jacob’s home town of St. Joseph to share memories of the beloved 11-year-old.
Dayton encourages people to leave their porch lights on for Jacob on Saturday night and Sunday night.
All seats for Sunday’s memorial service have been claimed, but space was still available in a simulcast location on the College of St. Benedict campus.

On Sept. 6, his kidnapper, Danny Heinrich, confessed to murdering Jacob in 1989. He told investigators he buried the boy’s body in a field in Paynesville.

His mother Patty then pledged that the work her family has done through the Jacob Wetterling Resource Center raising awareness of the exploitation of children would continue.
