Yelich, Marlins stop 5-game losing streak, beat Mets

Jacob deGrom labored through five innings and the Mets could not complete the four-game sweep of the Marlins, dropping the finale, 6-4, on Thursday night at Citi Field. Yelich went 3 for 4 with a three-run home run and two singles en route to four RBIs and two stolen bases. Asdrubal Cabrera did come off the bench for a pinch hit two run homer (18) in the ninth but the Mets wouldn’t get any closer as Fernando Rodney slammed the door on the game, ensuring the Marlins of at least one win in this series.

It’s been a tough two weeks for deGrom, and what briefly looked to be a return to form by the Mets took an unwelcome turn. They fell two games behind the Cardinals for the second wild-card spot and are down a second baseman, as Neil Walker confirmed that he’ll undergo back surgery to deal with a herniated disc. Jose Urena gets the nod, and he’s 2-5 with a 5.83 ERA and 39 strikeouts this season. Pitches that were coming in at 93 or 94 miles per hour in the first inning deflated to 91 and 92 as Jacob deGrom labored in the fifth.

– With a 9-6 win over the Padres for a three-game sweep, the Braves have now scored at least seven runs in five consecutive home games for the first time since August 7-10, 1953.

“After all the evidence has been gathered, he thinks that’s where he’s probably headed”, Collins said. Suzuki advanced to second after Martin Prado walked, and Yelich followed by lacing a first-pitch fastball to center, giving the Marlins a 1-0 lead.

As much as Mets fans like to see the colorful Colon bat, the veteran pitcher didn’t do himself any favors by grounding into a pair of double plays.

Jacob deGrom allowed three runs on six hits over five innings in Thursday’s loss to the Marlins.

New York’s three-game winning streak was snapped as they dropped to 5-2 on their homestand with three remaining against the Nationals. DeGrom is 4-2 in nine career starts against the Marlins but was ripped for five runs and 10 hits over 3 2/3 innings by the Marlins on July 23.

With New York already leading 2-1 and runners on first and second, All-Star Marcell Ozuna made a diving catch on Flores’ sinking line drive to end the third inning.

The Mets broke through against Marlins starter Jose Urena (3-5) in the sixth.
