Yellowstone River Closes Indefinitely Over Deadly Parasite

By Friday, roughly 4,000 dead fish had been counted, but the total number is estimated to be in the tens of thousands, including fish that sank to the bottom, officials said.

Sheppard said they don’t have the staff to clean up the banks of the river.

The FWP officials spoke to a crowd of about 50 people – anglers, local lawmakers, the media and business owners – at a fishing access site where the stench of dead whitefish rotting on the riverbank wafted through the air.

High water temperatures and low stream flow are believed to be additional stressors that made the fish more susceptible to the parasite.

The parasite first invaded the Upper Snake River in 2012.

“We want to try to minimize this”, Horton said. Experts suspect that the reason for the sudden and catastrophic infection in the Yellowstone River are said in a statement.

This Sunday, Aug. 21, 2016, photo shows the Yellowstone River near Pray, Mont. “So, on the morning of August 19, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks closed a 183-mile stretch of the Yellowstone River, banning all fishing, swimming, floating, and boating”. However, Dave Moser, a biologist with FWP fisheries, says that the microscopic organism was from other waters, most likely, carried in from unclean boats that were not drained and dried properly, possibly even from waders.

Montana has only experienced two outbreaks of the parasite over the last 20 years, both in isolated locations, but other states including Washington and OR have had to deal with its impact. The Bryozoan releases the parasite that fish absorb through their gills. There are so many spores being found inside the fish that the scientists are calling it a naive reaction.

Nancy Olson said her dog ate a small amount of the dead fish and died, and she is now anxious about other animals.

“The other thing that’s concerning is from the histology results there were high numbers of parasites seen in multiple tissues. Why that’s a concern is that the sheer volume of parasites that’s out there makes it very easy for the parasite to be spread to other waters”. As of writing, recreational areas along the river are closed due to the aforementioned tests that need to be done.

They will collect fish samples from the Springdale area, as well as the Boulder, Shields, and Stillwater rivers, and then send them to the agency within the next few days.

Fishing guides and rafting operators who run businesses along the river said the move could be catastrophic to the area’s sizable outdoor industry, which depends heavily on the busy summer season. In other rivers, outbreaks of the disease persisted until water temperatures dropped months later.

Biologists say, a parasite like this may be hard to get rid of, but we can help the fish build a resistance. However, if the fish are given time to adapt they may build up some immunity to the parasite and recover.
