Yemen was previously the preserve of Daesh’s rival Al Qaida, which controls swathes of the south and east, but since March the group has claimed a string of high-profile attacks.

“The explosion was caused by a vehicle bomb which exploded behind the military hospital in the Sha’oubdistrict in Sanaa, which injured 28 people including 12 women in a building where victims of a previous attack were being mourned”, a medical source said.

The extremist Sunni militant group considers Shi’ites as heretics and has frequently targeted them in attacks in several countries. AQAP and the IS have intensified attacks against the Shiite Houthi group since the Houthis started to advance into the southern regions where the terrorist groups are active.

But analysts said that IS was now clearly in the ascendant.

The last of these, a suicide bombing by a Saudi national on Friday in a Shia mosque in Kuwait, killed 26 people and wounded 227 others.

On Tuesday, a Houthi military spokesman said its forces had launched a Scud missile at a Saudi military base.

Saudi Arabia-led coalition forces have carried out airstrikes killing dozens of civilians in Saada City, in northern Yemen, since April 2015 in apparent violation of the laws of war.

The captives, including convicted murderers, were being held outside Taez in southwestern Yemen, when the jail was overrun by fighters of the pro-government’s Popular Resistance Committees.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Some 1,200 inmates fled a prison in Yemen on Tuesday after guards deserted their posts amid fierce fighting between Shiite rebels and their opponents, officials said. It said satellite imagery showed over 210 impact locations in built-up areas consistent with aerial bombings.

Human Rights Watch wrote to the Saudi Arabian government seeking information on intended targets of 13 airstrikes in Saada, but has received no response.
