Yooka-Laylee is the upcoming spiritual successor to the much beloved Banjo-Kazooie for the N64, and was a Kickstarter hit a year ago.

Playtonic Games has released a substantial Yooka-Laylee update, offering details about the Toybox demo and full game.

Playtonic wrapped up their info dump by dishing on the Toybox, a standalone experience tailored to Kickstarter backers who pledged to certain tiers of the game.

It’s been awhile since we last heard about Yooka-Laylee, the Kickstarter funded 3-D platformer from former Rare developers.

Capital B is the main villain of Yooka-Laylee, and he seeks to turn all of the world’s literature into money. Yooka and Laylee have to “seek out the magical Paiges required to explore the mysterious Grand Tomes”. This will be larger than the originally envisioned product and offer special props, collectibles, and secrets.

Following last year’s sandbox-y pre-alpha appearance at E3, Playtonic promised not to show anything else until the game was nearly ready for prime-time.

Those who backed Yooka-Laylee can expect a playable slice of the game soon. There is also the new power meter, which is designed “to empower fun and challenging platforming gameplay while avoiding the all-too-occasional tedium of resource management”.

Quills, another collectible item, function as currency for in-game moves.

Capital B and Trowser aren’t Yooka-Laylee’s only new characters. He’s forced to create new devices for Capital B. Dr. Puzz, on the other hand, left after the takeover and is using her brain and abilities to create new transformations for Yooka and Laylee to use on their quest.

Playtonic added that while it’s not ready to reveal the game’s final release date yet, it is “getting close” and is working towards the same release window penned previous year, which is October 2016.

“As promised in our Kickstarter campaign, the Toybox isn’t a traditional “demo”, but a self-contained, spoiler-free sandbox created to give Yooka-Laylee backers a taste of the platforming to come in the final game”, says the blog.
