Officials on Monday said that the explosion Sunday in Central Park that sent a tourist to the hospital was likely caused by an “explosive experiment” that is not related to any sort of terrorist activities.

“Beyond the caliber of fireworks just based on what we heard”, said Hinds. The victim is undergoing surgery Sunday afternoon, authorities said at an afternoon news conference.

Lt. Mark Torre, of the New York Police Department’s bomb squad, says the firework was like an “explosive experiment” probably was created to “make a large noise”.

Responding to the explosion, the student’s school issued a statement Monday identifying Golden: “The University of Miami’s thoughts and prayers are with Connor Golden as he recovers from this horrific accident that took place in Central Park Sunday morning”.

Nonetheless, the blast rattled New Yorkers, especially in the wake of recent acts of terror in the United States and elsewhere in the world.

Connor Golden, who was visiting from Virginia, stepped on an explosive material that had been left behind as he was with walking in the park yesterday.

Torre said someone may have tried to set the device off earlier and left it behind when it didn’t appear to work. It appeared to have been put together by someone with knowledge about chemistry.
