Your annual reminder that Burning Man isn’t that special of an idea

Buying and selling goods is forbidden at the festival, with the exception of ice and a café in Center Camp, where free-form entertainment and performances take place.

Beside me, a “virgin burner” rings a bell and rolls around in the dust with excitement.

This summer brought more money-focused controversy, with news that the Bureau of Land Management, which administers the Black Rock Desert, was delaying the event’s permit until organizers agreed to provide infrastructure and to throw in perks for officers – hot showers, laundry facilities, personal flush toilets, prime rib dinners and frozen Choco Tacos. I’m returning after 15 years, and it feels like a homecoming.

That’s just one of the burning (sorry) questions raised by this trailer for Burning Man: The Musical, a new theatrical work in progress from writer and Google employee Matt Werner, who recently unleashed a five-minute musical number from the play as part of his campaign to get the whole production funded. Since then, it has evolved into a week-long festival and a bona-fide cultural phenomenon.

Throughout the week, the playa is transformed from near-empty vastness into a busy pop-up metropol; a city that is populated by mutant vehicles, DJ booths, impromptu performances and numerous outdoor art galleries. He jumps at a chance to make this a reality by crashing one of the elite Burning Man campsites. Individuals actually do stroll as much as you and offer you presents, typically precisely the present you had simply wished for, nevertheless unlikely: A die-cut Burning Man medallion; a chilly beer and a scorching canine; or sure, even a frozen Choco-Taco.

Having attended and documented Burning Man from its first days in the desert, Guy’s Art of Burning Man clearly demonstrates an insider’s perspective. No matter it’s, every thing one sees or hears at Burning Man is a present, created by somebody for the group – typically at nice expense. After my hesitant “yes”, he proceeded to draw a flower on my thigh.

In my twenties, I think I would have enjoyed it – or at least not minded it – but I’m 34 years old now.

You like Burning Man. I get it. But someone else’s art – or life epiphany (see above) – is not less valid because the art has never been to Burning Man or because the epiphany didn’t happen there. They were so open, diverse and exciting. If we don’t uphold that one, no more Black Rock City.

Set to begin August 30, the 2015 Burning Man art festival will run through September 7. My excitement was tempered by an anxiety about the festival being ruined by becoming too big and “mainstream”. It’s like one giant game of human telephone since (thankfully) most people are not on the internet or using cell phones. And when adding an approximate 10,000 new attendees each year, the impact keeps growing. Many describe it as a transformative experience. It’s pretty clear that from the organisation’s perspective, this is not a festival about dance music.

Burning Man 2006 generated an estimated 27,000 tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions”.

Musk made the comment in 2014 at an after-party following the premiere of HBO series Silicon Valley.

As noted in that coverage, as well, these are often people getting naked in the desert while talking about how much they care about the environment.
