YouTube Adds Virtual Reality Support to Android App

If you are a publisher you can lead the pack with Jump, an exclusive VR programme by Google. By linking to a video using the spotlight annotation in another video, the linked video will appear in more “Recommended Video” lists for people that are viewing other fishing videos.

While this sort of move was probably inevitable in today’s climate of monthly paid streaming services, it is sad to see the site move toward a model that will probably eventually be totally subscription-based, assuming YouTube wants to increasingly move toward the Netflix system as they have indicated.

Google also announced that existing YouTube videos will be viewable in Google Cardboard via a new virtual movie theatre, which drops viewers into a sparse, 3D setting where they can pretend to sit back, alone, in a dark place, and watch their chosen video on a distant screen, blinking in the dark. Here is the process for watching virtual reality video on YouTube app. Just follow it and enjoy watching videos in a more interesting way.

Makers of virtual reality content material can add VR movies suitable with the Cardboard viewer instantly to YouTube.

The bigger news may be that every YouTube video can now be viewed on Cardboard. The problem is, almost everything on YouTube – including that video – was not filmed in VR, but on normal cameras and smartphones.

YouTube for Android has initially received the new VR experience.

Currently, the Android app and Google Cardboard are the only way to watch VR videos on YouTube.

To use the feature, users need to tap on the three-dot options menu, and select “Cardboard”.

YouTube already updated its Android app, so you can grab it now via the link below.

As for Cardboard v1. But if you push the boundary, creators will start making videos knowing that people will be watching them in different ways. “VR is a new platform”. Users can continue to watch videos for free as they always have with the regular advertisements. You want to catch up on last night’s late show or check out a few sports highlights, but you soon find yourself trapped in mind-numbing loop of annoying advertisements. I’m seeing it on devices updated through the Play Store too, though.
