Who knew that sitting around and playing video games was such a rewarding profession?
Even if you have never sat down to a watch a “Let’s Play” video or not you’ve probably heard of PewDiePie (Felix Kjellberg when he’s offline) the YouTube star who has racked 37 million subscribers. For all that hard work he was rewarded with a reported $7.4 million dollars in earning previous year, which made a lot of people raging.
The feature also mentioned gamers receive large portions of their revenue from Google AdSense, and like Kjellberg, some of these YouTubers also make money from selling merchandise.
Now it’s worth noting that Sweden has one of the planet’s highest taxation systems, where very almost 50% of income is handed straight over to the government. And just like that, we feel a little more justified in begrudging him his success. “Here we are five years later, and it’s exploded”.
“What people I guess don’t really think about until it’s in their face is that I have 9 billion views, and that translates to something”, he says.
“I make more than I need from YouTube”, he admitted in a Reddit ask-me-anything interview past year.
According to a Swedish newspaper, Kjellberg’s company, PewDiePie Productions AB, was worth nearly $3.5 million in 2013.
