YouTube ramps 360-degree video with ‘Spotlight Stories’
Just in time for Christmas, Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects Group (ATAP) has collaborated with Aardman Animations (the Oscar-winning studio behind Wallace and Gromit), to bring a new short film to YouTube, and to Google Spotlight Stories on Android. As the chase goes on from room to room, up and down, the stranger remains elusive – leaving only a trail of gifts for the caretaker to follow.

If you look away from the main character, the story will pause, allowing you to unlock other side-stories only available by exploring the scene.
There are two versions of the video available, one which is optimised for Android Phones from Google Spotlight Stories in YouTube app. There is also a 360 version available on iOS and web browsers as Google didn’t want anyone to miss ‘Special Delivery’.
The format lets movie creators take advantage of sensors like the gyroscope and accelerometer in order to create an immersive viewing experience that involves 3D and 2D animations and 360-degree video. Although this is the case, the videos can still be found on the Google Spotlight stories YouTube channel and the YouTube app as well.
“You’ll want to watch “Special Delivery” a few times to find all the surprises within the story”, an official blog post from YouTube says.

More Spotlight Stories will roll out next year to the YouTube app on Android and the YouTube iOS app, Google notes. “According to Google, ‘Special Delivery” contains 10 subplots, three different ways to see the ending and 60-plus moments where the viewer can follow the story in a different way by moving their smartphone.
