YouTube’s iOS app gets a makeover

Google rolled out a pretty big update to the YouTube app for iOS on Monday that includes the new Material Design introduced with Android 5.0 Lollipop, along with a few pretty nifty new editing tools.

Early adopters are now filling the App Store with one-star reviews of the app’s redesign, claiming that the new layout involving the “garish” and “harsh” red header wastes space, while the changes to navigation actually require more swiping and tapping to get to content that used to be within easy reach. Material Design is already featured on YouTube app for Android that was updated several months ago.

After a half-hour of time spent with Google’s tech support, our agent returned to the phone to explain that his supervisor had just told him the new interface was “not yet available for iOS devices”. Its home page will continue to showcase the recommended videos while swiping to the left would disclose the subscribed channels. Subscriptions provides a chronological view of the most recent videos posted to the user’s channels, with a series of thumbnail icons at the top of the display providing access to individual channels.

The Account tab houses a user’s playlists, watch history, and the videos uploaded by the user, all in one spot.

With the latest update to the YouTube iOS app, your iPhone has become a mini video-editing studio. A fresh look and new tools will be great for app users. The editing tools are simple, but effective and enable users to trim videos or add a soundtrack, and even add filters if they want to.

However, online users were quick to voice out their opinions about YouTube’s updated interface and functions, a few criticizing the lack of a Picture in Picture (PIP) feature and incompatibility for the colorblind.
