Yuma reports first travel-related Zika case

Mosquitoes that can carry the Zika virus has been found in 12 California counties, but the California Department of Public Health has no evidence that these mosquitoes are transmitting the Zika virus in the state.

Nor would the state reveal if any of them are pregnant women, a vulnerable population given the apparent link to Zika and birth defects in unborn children.

The CDC issued an unprecedented travel warning Monday, advising pregnant women and their partners not to travel to a small community just north of downtown Miami, where Zika is actively circulating. One of them may have been born at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley, according to media reports, although officials will not confirm this. Officials said the new cases bring the total amount to 19 residents with travel-related infections. Obama requested $1.9 billion three months ago for several purposes, including creating a vaccine for the disease, taking steps to control the mosquitoes that spread Zika and helping other countries battle the virus.

The Food and Drug Administration said in a statement Friday that it determined the mosquitoes wouldn’t have a significant impact on the environment. The state now has the capacity to test 6,239 people for active Zika virus and 1,840 for Zika antibodies. Some mosquitos carrying the Zika virus were recently discovered in Miami, Florida.

Zika virus can spread through mosquito bites, and common symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes.

Of 1,658 Zika cases nationally, 433 involve pregnant women, as of July 21, according to the city’s release.
