Climaco was killed in an ambush around 3:50 p.m. Monday hours after he and his party mates have filed their Certificates of Candidacy (COC).

Balisado said the police and military will still have to assess the situation in Tungawan and come up with a recommendation before a place will be declared as election hotspot.

Tungawan Vice Mayor Abdurauf Abison was injured, along with town employee Fortunato Mangubat, driver Charlie de la Cruz, and a certain Bebot, a member of the Special Civilian Active Auxiliary.

The spokesman said two other companions – Carlnan Canones Climaco, a candidate for mayor, and town councilwoman Loverlie Caracol – were unscathed in the attack.

Senior Superintendent Cesar Bael, provincial director of PNP Zamboanga Sibugay, said the armed men belong to lawless elements.

Climaco’s term as mayor was due to end next year and a cousin who was planning to run in next year’s elections to succeed him was traveling with him but was not hurt in the attack, Palma said. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the ambush, but police suspect the attack was politically motivated.
