Zero Emissions, Zero Fatalities — Nissan IDS Concept

At center stage are visions of cars that drive themselves without emitting a bit of pollution.

Select the full-autonomous “Piloted Drive” mode and the vehicle “imitates the driver’s own style and preferences” so it acts more like you, even though it is doing all the work. In driving mode, the steering wheel sits in its traditional place, but when placed into “piloted driving”, the wheel folds away and a set of screens emerge to entertain the passengers.

“The Nissan IDS Concept has different interiors depending on whether the driver opts for Piloted Drive or Manual Drive”, says design director Mitsunori Morita.

At the Tokyo motor show this week Nissan unveiled the IDS concept, an EV that previews the company’s autonomous driving technologies as well as the general outlines of the next-generation Leaf.

“It compensates for human error, which causes more than 90% of all vehicle accidents”, Ghosn told reporters. Carmakers believe autonomous driving technologies will reduce the number of incidents.

It’s also about pushing an ambitious government-backed plan that paints Japan as a leader in automated driving technology.

“Nissan intelligent driving improves a driver’s ability to see, think and react”, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn says in a statement.

In Piloted mode, the vehicle aims to make the atmosphere more relaxed in the cabin.

SUVs have become the hottest trend in the auto world. Nissan’s approach is similar to that of Tesla, which recently rolled out Autopilot to the United Kingdom and Europe, a system that lets the vehicle drive itself on motorways but gives control back to the driver everywhere else.

Meanwhile, automakers are continuing to push energy-efficient cars.

At a special section of the show, visitors can try out a few of the so-called “smart mobility” devices such as Honda’s seat on a single-wheel as well as small electric vehicles. FCVs are considered green cars because they do not produce carbon dioxide while driving.

“By connecting the Clarity fuel-cell vehicle with hydrogen stations and external power providers, Honda wants to see a society where we’ll generate power, use it and connect through hydrogen-made energy”, said Honda president Takahiro Hachigo.

Foreign manufacturers are also promoting environmentally friendly cars, such as BMW’s plug-in hybrid model X5 xDrive40e. He said it has damaged trust in the marque among Japanese consumers.
