Florida officials on Tuesday announced the first case of Zika acquired by local mosquitoes in Pinellas County, located some 265 miles (425 km) from Miami, where the first locally transmitted USA cases were reported.

“In Pinellas County, the Department of Health and Pinellas County Mosquito Control are already working together and have begun aggressive spraying and mosquito abatement efforts”, Scott said. Pinellas County Mosquito Control is providing the service.

Much of the analysis presented on the website was published last July in bioaRchive. Zika has also been linked to eye defects, hearing impairment and stunted growth in babies.

Health officials in northern Utah say a pregnant woman in Weber County has become infected with the Zika virus after traveling to Mexico.

If testing reveals a unit of blood is reactive for the Zika virus, both blood centers said they would quarantine the donated blood, notify the donor and alert the Florida Department of Health and federal health officials. The no-cost tests are available on a walk-in basis between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Zika is spread primarily through bites from a specific mosquito. While the illness typically resolves within a week, some severe cases may require hospitalization. “It will give very good information about the exact proportion of pregnant women infected with Zika that can develop birth defects”. In addition to mosquitoes, the virus can be sexually transmitted, the CDC has said.

“While this investigation is ongoing, DOH still believes that ongoing active transmissions are only occurring in the two previously identified areas in Wynwood and Miami Beach”, the governor said in a statement.

If you are traveling to any of those countries, take extra precaution to protect yourself from mosquitoes when overseas.

“We are also interested in investigating how congenital Zika virus infection can interfere with not only prenatal, but also postnatal gray and white brain maturation”, she added.
