Zika cases in pregnant women double in Colombia

Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that’s been strongly linked to severe birth defects.

There are urgent concerns about Zika virus infection and pregnant women.

The Centre on Friday made a decision to constitute a technical group to monitor Zika virus situation.

“All our decisions about vaccines are made on the basis of strict cost-effectiveness analysis”.

Most people do not need to be hospitalized from the disease.

At a special meeting Thursday in Geneva, WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan said the virus was becoming much more of a threat.

Only one of the four cases is likely to develop symptoms, such as low-grade fever, joint pain, red eyes, rash, muscle pain, physical weakness, lethargy and headaches, which may last from two to seven days.

All three had recently returned from countries that have experienced a Zika outbreak.

On the heels of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) statement that the Zika virus was “spreading explosively”, the Centre said it has constituted a special, technical group to monitor the spread of Zika in other countries.

The main effort of the prevention efforts was to prevent the reproduction of Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes, which transmit dengue fever and the Zika virus to humans, Andi said.

Pregnant woman or woman trying to get pregnant should not travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.

That country has seen a surge in babies with microcephaly, or abnormally small brains, born from mothers infected with zika, although there is no definitive proof zika was the cause.

The Ministry has reported the case to the Directorate of Epidemiology and the National Health Institute in order to carry out an analysis. Governments of several countries are issuing warnings against travelling to South America.

The Centers for Disease Control this month recommended that pregnant women consider postponing travel to affected areas, and health officials in El Salvador have advised women to delay pregnancy until 2018.

Zika is spread through mosquito bites but the cases in the U.S. were contracted during foreign travel
