The CDC recommends pregnant women avoid traveling to Zika-affected areas which include countries ranging from Mexico into the Caribbean, Central American and South America.
Morrison confirmed that no cases of Zika have been reported on P.E.I.
“Both men and women of childbearing age should take precautions if they have recently traveled, or plan to travel, to a location where Zika is spreading”, says Smith. 47 of those cases occurred in Los Angeles and San Diego counties. However, Zika was brought to 12 counties in the state from people who traveled to Zika-infected regions.
Today the city of Amarillo’s Public Health Department announced that another person in our area has the virus.
One new non-travel related case of the Zika virus was reported from Wynwood in Miami-Dade County.
National Institute of Health began testing a Zika virus vaccine in humans on Wednesday. “The one they used for aerial spraying, Dibrom, or Naled, appears to have been very effective because they had very high kill rates in the mosquito traps there”, said Frieden. After each positive test, health officials go to the patient’s neighborhood and look for active, daytime-biting mosquitoes. The Aedes Aegypti mosquito carries the Zika virus – and climate is a factor. It is believed to cause microcephaly, or abnormally small heads and severe developmental problems, in babies whose mothers are infected with the disease.
On Friday, Governor Robert Bentley approved the the use of emergency funds to pay for mosquito control in response to the Zika virus.
“The mosquito that spreads the virus is not found in the United Kingdom, and in any case would not be able to establish in Scotland because of our climate”.
