Q What are the odds that my child will develop microcephaly if I contract Zika while pregnant?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending pregnant women avoid travel to the Wynwood neighborhood near Miami, Florida.
The death of a newborn in the Houston area has been linked to the Zika virus, Texas public health officials said Tuesday. The scientific community initially suspected that contracting Zika during the first trimester of pregnancy would have more of a negative impact on fetuses than during the second or third trimester, since the brain is less developed during this period. “Obviously, the afternoon showers pose the more potential threat for any kind of water source to be maintained”, Linda Johnson with the Pee Dee Regional Health Department said.
“Today, Florida’s Department of Health has confirmed that 10 additional people have contracted the Zika virus locally, likely through a mosquito bite”, Scott said. However, Texas officials have been expecting the virus because the Aedes aegypti mosquito that carries the virus can be found in parts of the state.
Champaign County has been laying mosquito traps provided by the state for weeks, Webb said, but hasn’t captured numerous pests. Dr. Michael Perry Gomez said the adult male has been treated for the associated symptoms and is recovering.
“Even though no mosquitoes with WNV and EEE have been identified, mosquitoes capable of passing these illnesses are here and the consequences, especially of EEE, can be severe”. There is no vaccine or cure for Zika.
The virus is of most concern to pregnant women or women considering getting pregnant in the near future.
For the moment, South Florida remains the only place in the country where mosquitoes have spread the virus.
“Zika virus can also be transmitted to sexual partners by both males and females”.
Although, I’m sure by now the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health officials – like those in say…

Hillary Clinton, who visited Miami on Tuesday and toured a health clinic near Wynwood, called on Congress to immediately return to Washington to pass legislation to provide emergency funding for Zika testing, treatment and research. Infants born to mothers with confirmed infections will be monitored for one year. In all cases, the Zika infection was contracted during foreign travel. Many governments are encouraging women to postpone their pregnancies but are not increasing funding and resources for access to contraception for all. If using sunscreen and insect repellent, apply sunscreen first and then the repellent. Other ways to become infected include blood transfusions and laboratory exposure. If they do travel to those areas, they should talk to their health care provider and strictly follow steps to avoid mosquito bites during their trip.
