Zika virus: Brazil dismisses link between larvicide and microcephaly

The question with regard to a possible link between pyriproxyfen and microcephaly was posed on Quora by a reported resident of Recife, Brazil, described as the “epicenter” of the Zika-virus outbreak.

President Dilma Rousseff said Saturday the Zika virus outbreak will not compromise the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janiero and said Brazil will have considerable success in fighting the mosquitos that carry Zika.

Colombia reported Saturday that there was a sharp increase in Zika virus cases in the country, with an announced total of 31,555 cases, including 5,013 pregnant women.

Brazil mobilized its military and hundreds of thousands of health workers over the weekend to fight the mosquito that carries the Zika virus.

Athletes expected to take part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio in August have expressed concern, and local officials have promised to fumigate venues.

The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes from conjunctivitis.

Earlier, Noronha’s team at the PUC-Parana University was the first to discover Zika in the amniotic fluid of pregnant women – raising alarm over a link between the virus and microcephalic babies, who are born with damaged brains and abnormally small heads. 5,000 pregnant women now have the Zika virus.

The case was confirmed last week.

Zika is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito from two species, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, neither of which is common to the Buffalo Niagara region.
